CLUB MEETING  January 9TH at 5:30pm B52's Bar and Grille  Come help plan our next months activities and join us for a little social time afterward.  B52's (formally Bagpipes) is on Norman Berry Drive in College Park.

HIKE INN - Saturday/Sunday  January 26th and 27th  The only way to visit the "Len Foote Inn" is to walk the light to moderate 5.2 mile hiking trail. It is a great hike with bubbling stream and beautiful mountain views.  We will have some time to shower and relax before the lodge folks prepare us a great family style dinner. (the biscuits are great!) After dinner a wildlife presentation before we sit by the fire to play read or play games. We will spend the night in the rustic but comfortable rooms at the lodge, eat a hardy family style breakfast before making the return hike back to our cars.  Last year we had 32 happy campers that made the trip.  This year space is more limited but we have room enough for you to join the fun. Cost is $65 ppdo  Space is limited so please make your reservations early to avoid any disappointment.  First come first served! For more information contact Doug Crail  404-714-2628

SNOWMOBILE TRIP  - Coming in February -  Idaho, Montana, Wyoming…Yellowstone… This may be last time you can snowmobile through Yellowstone so plan on it.   Dates and plans will be determined during January Club meeting on January 9th.
We made a similar trip last year and a great time. Come out and help us plan this year's event.

St. Vincent Island - February or March… We will on St. Joseph peninsula (between Port St. Joe and Apalachicola) on Friday and Saturday nights.  The tent sites are practically on the beach.  On Saturday morning we will take a short ferry ride to St. Vincent Island, and hike or bike the island where we hope to spot some exotic wildlife, including samba deer, (an Asian elk weighing up to 700 lb.), osprey, and eagles.  This is  a great place to collect large seashells.  Tent campsites are around $12 a night (up to 6 people per site); the ferry to the island is $10/person plus$10/bicycle.  Group size limited to 12.  Contact Jacques Palsy, 404-714-2903 or 404-762-0720.

Costa Rica 2002 - Costa Rica trip is planned for April 2002. It will consist of 5 or 6 days. The dates are not yet confirmed, but will be within April 10-24th. We will stay on the Pacific side of Costa Rica.  Two of the days are for travel as it takes approximately 4 hours by vehicle to get to the Pacific side from SJO. There will be a couple of days for diving, a day for the canopy jungle tour, and perhaps another day for a volcano tour. For those who don't dive, there can be a quad trip through the countryside. We will stay at an all-inclusive hotel. Earlier this year, the rate for an airline employee was $25.00 per person per day. All-inclusive. You must show an airline ID to get this rate. Further details will be provided on rates for non-employees. There will be a van/bus waiting for us when we arrive and to take us back to the airport. We just all need to make it on the flight. There will be a limit of 15 persons for the trip. More details to
follow as information is gathered. If you are interested, please contact Kathy Glad at Kathy.glad@delta.com.  Or her home phone number is 770-801-8407

Welcome  to the Delta Air Lines Outdoor Adventure Club web  page.
Fred's words of wisdom.
Don't forget to drink. I drink every chance I get. Most of the time I am not even thirsty. Maybe it is because I just like to drink, it is certainly not for the taste, heck, after a couple of drinks it looses its taste. Nope, I make a conscience effort to drink. I even plan each day around how much I will need to drink, and I never let myself run out of something to drink. I always keep a supply of the wonderful stuff close at hand, and always know how far it is to the next place that I can get a drink. Occasionally I will stop to eat. That is a good thing, because I know that I will need to drink more because it takes liquid to digest food. If I drink all-day I can go all day and feel great in the morning. I need to drink sooo much that I if I don't drink enough  I begin to feel sluggish. I get hot really fast and my heart rate increases. I might even loose my appetite and begin to get edgy and short-tempered.  (Yup that's right, me get short tempered, can you imagine?) The point of all this…. If you are planing an outdoor event, whether it is a day hike or 5 days on the Appalachian Trail, summer or winter, your body needs water. I have so many times come across hikers that have underestimated the distance to the next water source, or worse have no idea where it is! Typically they have planned to be out for a couple of days and figured a bottle or two would hold them over.  By the time I run across them they are desperate for a drink. Don't ever put yourself or the others with you in this situation. Always carry more water than you think that you will need. In the summer I drink about a quart of water every 2-3 hours. Believe it or not this is on the low side as far as consumption goes. It is recommended that you drink more, like a quart every one and a half to two hours. If you plan on being out for a couple of days always consult the map, locate the reliable water sources and plan your trip around them. (Always filter or treat the water that you gather). Whelp that is all the time I have. Hope to see you in the great outdoors…

Fred.

My words could not possibly express how I feel about the attack on our great country. This flag is a symbol of what America is about, it has proudly flown above many battlefields. It represents the power, pride and unity of all Americans. I cry for those that have been lost and can feel a hurt deep down inside for those that are mourning. I wish that I could make their pain go away. I love you America…….
