A great technique I learned was for sideloading.  I learned this in one of Lynne Deptula's classes.  She basecoats her projects and then goes in to do the sideloading.  Wet the area with a clean brush.  Then you sideload your brush and paint where you want it.  Then go in with a Mop Brush and pat away the access.  You may have to go in a few times to get the shading you want but it helps take away those harsh lines.  If you are like me sideloading is the hardest for me.  But this technique was a life-saver!
