What is a drabble?  It's just a little snippet of a story of approximately 100 words.  The drabbles collected here are the result of the weekly challenge started by Lady A in April of 2003.  The responses appear on several lists, by a variety of authors.  Each week a new challenge is tossed out and responders have a week to answer.  Most of the authors write responses in a variety of AU's.  The drabbles posted here are those that were written in the ATF or other Modern AU by Cin, Heidi, Monica M. and Debbie M.  A link to each author's e-mail has been provided by clicking on the author's name with each snippet.  To see the other challenges or other author's responses to the various challenges,  please check out the archive at Lady A's Library:  http://lalibrary.net/m7/index.html

The individual authors retain the rights to their stories.  Standard disclaimers apply.  None of the characters are used with malicious intent and no profit is being made by those having fun here.

Undercover

By Cin

Ok Phyllis and Angel and I decided to play this time This one is for Monica

Warning: Just a bit of swearing

Universe: ATF

"This will never work," the obviously pregnant woman in the purple dress, hissed.

"Sure it will, just make it seem real," the young man whispered as he patted the hand on his arm.

"Oh!" The woman grabbed her stomach.

"Honey is it time?" He barely got the question out as his companion sank toward the floor.

"Oh God!" She screamed grabbing her stomach and beginning to pant.

"Great job, that's very real," the man whispered close to the woman's ear, as he watched his teammates move closer to their targets. The feat made possible by the distraction the two were providing in the crowded room.

His blue eyes bulged as a hand firmly grabbed the back of his neck and began squeezing as the voice screeched, "You're the son of a bitch responsible for this!"

"Excuse me sir, sounds like she's in the final transition phase of labor. I'm a medic maybe I can help." Nathan tried to keep from laughing watching the undercover agent play his part to the hilt. Their mischievous sharpshooter may never suggest such a plan again.

Challenge issued September 7, 2003 :  Write a drabble about something they use—animate or inanimate—that breaks down. Example: gun won't fire, they have a flat, their horse runs off, computer won't work. Have them dealing with working without it, or getting it fixed, whatever.

Workaround

By: Heidi

Note: In my job, a workaround is doing making do, working without it, getting it fixed, etc., at least five to ten times a day.

Characters: Josiah, JD

"The program won't do that," JD remarked.

"It must," Josiah said.  "I can't submit this report without statistics."

"Use the old program."

"It never worked for me."

"I don't know what to tell you Josiah.  The program will do what you need, but it won't merge with that version."

Josiah tilted his head.  "Will it let me copy and paste?"

"Big duh," JD said.  "There's an idea."  He immediately went to work, finding a way for both programs to accept a copy and paste solution.  "You sure you don't want to be computer support, Josiah?"

"Nope.  Give me a book."
