OINOUSSAI is a Greek block of islands which lies between the Greek island Chios and the Turkish coast.
Its habitants are mostly involved in shipping. Many Greek shipowners of international
status come from this island. In winter the island is rather scarcely populated whilst it gets
particularly crowded during the summer when a lot of people that originally come from the island and
spend most of their life abroad or in Athens, return to the island for their summer vacations.
The Athens based association dealing with the matters of the island is called S.F.O. and its president
is called Michalis Pateras. The London based association is called T.E.O. and their president is called Diamantis
Skinitis. The Mayor of the island is Mr. Chalkias.
The island has unique beauties. It has beautiful beaches with crystal clear waters. The capital of the island
is called Oinoussa, and is a very grotesque town. The people are very hospitable and friendly.
Entering the harbour anyone should notice the magnificent statue of the Oinoussian Mother, which was created by
Mrs Mary Papakostantinou (voted as Woman of Europe for the year 1993). The island hosts a Naval Academy.
The Cathedral is dedicated to St. Nicolas , the Keeper of sailors.
The island can be reached only by ship either from Peraeus or Chios. If you travel by plane you will have to fly
to Chios and then take the boat to Oinoussai.
